Winterizing a vacant home

Winterizing a vacant home is the process of making the necessary inspections, adjustments, modifications, repairs and arrangements pror to leaving a dwelling uninhabited (and typically unheated) during freezing weather. Without such preparations, weather elements may damage the building or its systems, including freezing water standing in pipes, fixtures, machines or containers, causing them to burst and leak when thawed. If the building is to remain heated, it may also be important to have the heating system inspected and serviced, as well as making arrangements for electricity, fuel supply, and an alarm system, caretaker, or property manager to minimize damage if the heat fails. Closing window shutters may also prevent wind damage and discourage burglars.
